Preventing Foot Pain When Running

If you enjoy running, keeping your feet healthy will ensure that you can keep running and do so pain-free. Maintaining the strength of all the muscles in the foot is important in preventing pain while running. Do some simple exercises regularly to help build strong feet, which in turn will keep the foot and ankle in better alignment and reduce the risk of injury leading to foot pain. Wear comfortable shoes that fit well and that have proper support. Running shoes should be replaced regularly. Rotate running shoes so that the same areas of the feet, ankles, and legs are not repeatedly stressed. Do not try to do too much, too fast. Listen to your body and slowly build up speed and distance. Have rest days. Practicing good foot health will not guarantee freedom from running injuries but may help prevent them and make healing easier. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Two Types of Flat Feet

The medical term for flat feet is known as pes planus or pes valgus. The noticeable symptom of flat feet is a lack of an arch when the foot is lying flat on the ground. Most babies are born with flat feet and the arch typically develops with age. Research has indicated there are two types of flat feet. An arch that can be seen when the foot is elevated is known as a flexible flat foot and an absent arch also when the foot is elevated is known as a rigid flat foot. Flexible flat feet generally do not cause severe pain although some patients may feel mild achiness if intensely walking. Abnormal foot development may be the cause of rigid flat foot and surgery can be a necessary option for a significant correction. Some patients will even have a second surgery after the foot has fully formed to fuse the bones together. If you have flat feet, it is advised that you confer with a podiatrist.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.  

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Seniors and Falls

Everyone can stumble but older people have a higher propensity to falling. In fact, one in four seniors fall each year and the chances of falling double after falling once. Falls can be serious and cause broken bones or a head injury. They can greatly interfere with one’s ability to function and do so independently. Even if a fall is avoided, an older person can become fearful of falls and limit their participation in daily activities. This can further lead to weakness and increased chances of falling. Physical conditions that can make one more prone to falling include lower body weakness, vitamin D deficiency, difficulty with walking or balance, use of certain medications, vision problems, and foot pain. Other issues that lead to a greater risk of falls are poorly fitting footwear or home hazards, such as broken or uneven steps or throw rugs that can be tripped over. Tending to physical and other conditions, getting regular strength and balance exercise, and seeing a podiatrist for evaluation of risk for falling can help as well. As one ages, regular visits to a podiatrist are encouraged as a preventative health measure.

Dealing With a Heel Spur

Exercising is good for the body and mind but can be painful when one has a heel spur. A heel spur is a bony growth that attaches to the heel bone and can grow into the arch of the foot. These can develop from a common condition known as plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation and possible tearing of the plantar fascia tissue running across the length of the foot.
