Tips for Preventing Blisters
Foot blisters are a common but very annoying problem. Fortunately, there are many ways to prevent them. First, you should look for a shoe that fits well, holds your heel firmly in place, and leaves some wiggle room for your toes. Avoid buying shoes with rough seams or edges along the inside, as these can irritate the skin. Socks are important too. Look for socks that are made with a moisture-wicking material. These will help keep your feet dry. You can also use an antiperspirant or talcum powder. Toughen the skin on your feet by slowly increasing the distance of your walks or runs and by moisturizing your heels if they are dry. If you have certain areas of your feet that are prone to blistering, cover them with sports tape, moleskin, or special patches to protect them. For more information about how to prevent foot blisters, please consult with a podiatrist.
Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. Jeff Brooks of Oceanside Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Foot Blisters
Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.
What Are Foot Blisters?
A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.
Symptoms
(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)
- Bubble of skin filled with fluid
- Redness
- Moderate to severe pain
- Itching
Prevention & Treatment
In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

What Are Gout Tophi?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. This acid can crystallize and become lodged in the joints of the feet, leading to sudden and intense pain, swelling, and inflammation. Gout typically flares up and then goes away, only to flare up again in the future. It can become a chronic condition if measures are not taken to prevent future flare ups. Chronic gout can cause large, visible bumps, called tophi, to form in bones, joints, or cartilage. Tophi are made of urate crystals and are usually not painful unless they become infected or press on a nerve. But although they’re not painful in and of themselves, tophi are problematic because they can damage joints, destroy cartilage, and eventually lead to bone erosion, deformity, and disability. For more information about gout, please consult with a podiatrist.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.
Symptoms
- Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
- Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
- Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
- Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility
Risk Factors
- Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
- Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
- Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
- Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
- Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
- Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout
Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

What Is Causing My Foot Pain?
There are a multitude of reasons why your feet may hurt, including sprains, strains, fractures, bunions, and fungal infections. These can range from mild injuries to serious traumas or underlying medical conditions. An important way to find out what is causing your foot pain is by seeing a podiatrist. Note the type of pain you are experiencing and where it is to help your podiatrist diagnose the cause. For example, if you have sharp, stabbing pain in your heel, you may have plantar fasciitis. This is an injury that occurs when the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed because of repetitive stress and overuse. If you have foot pain, please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist near you.

The Consequences of Hammertoe
Hammertoe is a common foot deformity in which one or more of the smaller toes bends upward at the middle joint, giving the toe a hammer-like shape. This deformity is caused by an imbalance between the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles surrounding the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in the toes. Hammertoes are not just unsightly, they can also be painful. The tops of the toes may rub against your shoes while you walk, causing the toes to become callused. The irregular shape of the toes can make it difficult to find comfortable, well-fitting shoes. In some cases, the hammertoes can also alter your gait as you consciously or unconsciously make changes to the way you walk in order to avoid toe pain or keep your shoes on your feet. Hammertoes worsen over time if they are left untreated. If you have hammertoes, please seek the care of a podiatrist.
Hammertoe
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Jeff Brooks from Oceanside Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
- Pain in the affected toes
- Development of corns or calluses due to friction
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Contracture of the toes
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option
