Toenail Fungus Can Become Severe

A common condition that many patients suffer from is known as toenail fungus. There are noticeable symptoms that exist with this condition and they often consist of yellowed and thickened toenails. In severe cases, the nail may separate from the nail bed, and can eventually fall off. It is caused by a fungus that lives and thrives in moist environments. These areas can include public swimming areas, shower room floors, and locker rooms. It is considered to be contagious, and measures can be implemented that may help in preventing this condition. These can consist of wearing appropriate shoes while in these types of places, and it is helpful to avoid sharing towels and shoes. There are several treatment methods that can be used for toenail fungus, and it is advised to consult with a podiatrist who can provide the best options for you.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Jeff Brooks of Oceanside Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

Children and Broken Toes

Some symptoms your child might be experiencing if they have a broken toe are swelling, redness, severe pain, and discomfort. These symptoms typically occur at the time of the injury. In more severe fractures, the bone may protrude from the skin, which is referred to as a dislocated bone. Broken toes can happen for a variety of reasons including: stubbing the toe against a piece of furniture, stepping off of a curb unexpectedly, or jamming it while participating in sporting activities. If the pain is extreme, an X-ray should be performed to determine the extent of the fracture. If your child has broken his or her toe, it is advised that you speak to a podiatrist who can discuss proper treatment options with you.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Jeff Brooks from Oceanside Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

Possible Ways To Break Your Toes

Patients who have broken their toes are often familiar with the sudden pain this type of injury can cause. It may be difficult to move the affected toe, and can appear to be bruised or swollen. In severe fractures, a popping sound may be heard as the bone breaks, and it may protrude from the skin. Common reasons why this injury can happen may include stubbing your toe against a piece of furniture, suddenly stepping off of a curb, or dropping a heavy object onto it. To perform a proper diagnosis, an X-ray is generally taken, as this can help to determine the extent of the fracture. The foot may feel better when it is resting and elevated, followed by taping the injured toe to the toe next to it. This technique may be beneficial in providing the support that is needed as the healing process takes place. If you have broken your toe, please consult with a podiatrist who can provide your with correct treatment options.

Possible Causes of Lateral Foot Pain

Pain that is felt on the outside of the foot is referred to as lateral foot pain. It can cause severe pain and discomfort, and may occur for a variety of reasons. These may include inflamed tendons, stress fractures, or medical conditions such as arthritis. Patients that have endured an ankle sprain may be familiar with this type of foot pain. Additionally, the cuboid bones are located on the outer edge of the foot. If excess weight or tension is placed on this part of the foot, it may result in lateral foot pain. If you have this type of pain, mild relief can be found when the affected foot is elevated, and possibly wrapped in an elastic bandage. It is advised to consult with a podiatrist who can determine the cause and offer proper treatment options for foot pain.
